CHAPTER 2
pages 20-28
When Winston wrote "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER" in his diary, he realized that he had just committed a 'thoughtcrime' and he knew he will eventually be punished, also known as 'vaporized' (killed). He decides to continue writing, thinking he was already 'dead'.
This Chapter kind of confused me a little bit. What happened to Mrs. Parson son? Why couldn't they go see the hanging of the prisoners from Eurasia?

I personally think that every chapter is very confusing to me and I think anyone who reads it might think that way. But I think you did good in summarizing what you really didn't get.
ReplyDeleteIt's strange to hear things like thoughtcrimes. But it's always fun to learn new things.
Yeah, I agree with you guys. I was confused too. By the way why does Winston think he is already dead?
ReplyDeleteOh and thanks for the summary! I didn't know vaporized meant killed.
I thought it meant like they disappear cause they turn into water vapor or something.

Well, I think Winston thinks he is already dead because he was already thinking negatively about the 'Party' and that is a considered as a 'thoughtcrime'. Committing thoughtcrimes is an automatic death sentence so, he thinks himself as dead already.
ReplyDelete@Janet's question, he meant that he already thought himself as a dead man, because he knew that he would eventually be found out for his thought crimes, so now "it became important to stay alive as long as possible."
